In 1972, DL Smith Electric was created when DL bought a small one-man electrical contracting firm, located at 1935 ½ Gage.

In 1997 DL and his son, Shawn, started a complimentary company to support the growing demand for high-tech telecommunications cabling.  DL Smith Communications provided structured cabling fiber and copper solutions for clients.  Additionally, DL Smith Communications provided business telephone systems, CCTV, and other special systems solutions for customers.  DL Smith Communications was renamed Alltech Communications in 2006, to help expand and develop a larger market share throughout the Midwest.
